Job Title: Biomedical Scientist, Progressive Band 5-6

Contract Type: Permanent

This is an exciting opportunity for an HCPC registered individual already within Laboratory Medicine to further their career in the specialist areas of Biochemistry. There are two vacancies, and the successful candidate(s) are expected to be assigned, in the first instance, to the Trace Elements and Specialist Biochemistry areas respectively.

Both posts are progressive and are open to application by staff who have achieved their HPCP registration, but have not yet achieved their Specialist Diploma. The successful candidates will initially be employed at Band 5, and supported to work towards their IBMS Specialist Diploma. On gaining their diploma, there will be automatic progression to Band 6. 

Specialist Biochemistry performs a range of automated, semi-automated and manual assays. Technologies used include Faecal Immunochemical Testing (FIT), Stone (calculi) analysis, Electrophoresis, ELISA and Automated Immunoassay.
Trace Element uses ICP-MS and other technologies to measure elements in bodily fluids for monitoring, diagnostic purposes, and for the detection of poisoning. 

You will be required to work 37.5 hours per week, with some weekend and bank holiday working.

Processing large volumes of routine biochemistry samples.

Supervision of junior members of staff.

Working within ISO 15189/UKAS (or equivalent) accredited laboratory standards.

Maintaining high standards of quality, accuracy, and turnaround times in a busy diagnostic laboratory.

You will need:

An HCPC-approved Biomedical Science degree (BSc) or other HCPC approved degree/top ups.

To be an HCPC-registered Biomedical Scientist.

Significant previous experience in a medical laboratory.
